It’s that time of year when our skin feels meh!
Did you know there is a difference between dry and dehydrated skin? Did you also know that the skin can also be a combination of both? Yet both feel the same – just dry!
So let’s shed some light on these differences
Dry skin is a natural skin type from birth, it lacks sebum (oil), your skin will feel dry all over, even on your legs, hands and scalp! It is more susceptible to premature aging, your skin will constantly need moisture, especially in winter. This skin type will need oil rich products, as they are full of naturally occurring fatty acids.
Dehydrated skin is a condition and can be experienced by anyone and at anytime. Your skin is lacking water and may feel dry and oily at the same time! You may also experience breakouts. Dehydrated skin comes and goes depending upon diet, environment, incorrect product use and various other factors. This skin condition will need water rich and water binding products, to plump up and hydrate your skin cells.
If your skin is dry and dehydrated it will feel flakey, itchy, tight, dull and may well be sensitive.
So what do you need to do to help you dry and/or dehydrated skin???
Make sure you drink lots of water to stay hydrated. A balanced Mediterranean diet containg lots of omega 3&6 will also help.
For your skin care routine pick oil and water base products, avoid clays as these soak up oils and can dry out the skin. Apply topical vitamins in the form of masks and serums. Providing your skin is not sensitive exfoliate 2-3 times a week to slough off those dead and dehydrated skin cells so that your products can hydrate your fresh new ones.
